Stretch luminous ceiling and wall systems at the Northwest World Gateway
NORTHWEST WORLD GATEWAY / McNAMARA TERMINAL
DETROIT, MICHIGAN
Specifier: SmithGroup / Detroit, MI
Installer: Division Nine Products, Inc. / Farmington Hills, MI

As part of the expansion of Northwest Airlines at Detroit Metro Airport, SmithGroup chose Newmat Stretch Ceilings to realize its innovative concept. Newmat provided 30,000 square feet of its translucent membranes NewLight, consisting of 40 curved areas in the connecting tunnel and 2 large free-floating rotundas. The spectacular lighting effect/show is accomplished by backlighting the Newmat membranes with ColorKinetics projectors, which are electronically programmed to timely display a wide range of colors and patterns. The architect and the lighting designer successfully utilized both the monolithic aspect and light diffusion of the Newmat membranes for this creative project.
