Picture yourself inside half of a giant eggshell. Then remove slices from the shell to allow light to come through. Next, increase the thickness of the shell to 4” to add dimension and make it acoustically sound. Finally, suspend the shell, tilted to fit the theater in which it is located. In a nutshell, these were the architect’s design requirements for this project. Newmat’s solution was a custom built aluminum skeleton covered with a satin finish micro-perforated membrane. The whole system was suspended with threaded rods from the concrete deck. The result is stunning as well as functional, to the full satisfaction of all parties involved.
